Rare earth oxides
Rare earth oxide (REO) has been considered as potential candidates for condenser surface coatings due to hydrophobicity, robustness and low cost. REO is changed from hydrophillic to hydrophobic with the amount of hydrocarbon materials absorbed to the surface, because hydrocarbon adsorption increases on roughened surfaces with more available surface area. Also, REO has characteristic of robust under harsh conditions. The hydrophobicity is maintained after exposure to abrasive wear and high temperature of about 1,000℃ for hours.
MEL develops that REO coating surfaces by using the simple dipping method can achieve enhanced condensation heat transfer performance.
